The Chaptico, Maryland, community is grieving the loss of Malik Javonn Somerville, who died at the age of 27 following a single-vehicle crash in Mechanicsville on Tuesday morning. His unexpected passing has left family members, friends, and loved ones mourning the loss of a young man whose life ended far too soon.
According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and emergency personnel were dispatched at approximately 7:40 a.m. on June 30 to the 27500 block of Thompson Corner Road after receiving reports of a serious crash involving a single vehicle.
When first responders arrived, they discovered a green pickup truck that had left the roadway and crashed into a tree. The driver, later identified as Malik Javonn Somerville of Chaptico, was trapped inside the wreckage. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Because of the severity of the collision, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Preliminary findings indicate Somerville was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Thompson Corner Road when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the truck left the roadway. Investigators said the vehicle first struck a utility pole before continuing into a stand of trees.
Officials reported that preliminary evidence suggests speed and driver error may have contributed to the collision. However, investigators emphasized that the crash remains under investigation, and no final determination regarding the cause has been made.
News of Somerville’s death has prompted an outpouring of sympathy throughout Southern Maryland. Family members, friends, and community members have shared heartfelt tributes remembering him as a beloved son, family member, and friend whose sudden loss has deeply affected everyone who knew him.
At this time, funeral and memorial service arrangements have not been publicly announced. His family is expected to share additional information once plans have been finalized.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation and is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that may assist detectives to contact Lieutenant Brian Connelly or the Collision Reconstruction Unit.
